Intermittent Hodgepodge: And now for something completely different…

Counting Chickens vs. Putting them in Baskets

So, in the midst of trying to get back in the habit of being creative and actually writing more of my current project and working more to get Waypoint published traditionally, I had a wild idea - why not do something completely different that has nothing to do with writing?

I know, I know, but hear me out.

Ever since I was in middle school, I used funny voices - I think as a way to cope. I had just moved to a new state, with few friends. Primarily, I did a Dr. Evil impression, because 1) Dr. Evil is hilarious; and, 2) Dr. Evil was the funny-guy-de-jure in those days. I think I did that as a way to gain friends, show them I could be funny, and probably as a way to hide my true self from the outside world.

Later, I would adopt a Gollum impression from Lord of the Rings. Then others, and others, and others. Now, coincidentally, some of my best friends also enjoy making funny voices as well, and we use it as a way to ad lib and riff off each other.

Did doing funny voices all the time help in the friendship category initially? No, and in fact, people thought it was annoying. So, if you’re a middle school child reading this, I wouldn’t recommend it.

However!

What in the world does all this have to do with writing?

That’s the neat part, it doesn’t!

I’ve always wanted to be an author, and I still do. And I’m still going to charge forward with that goal.

But, as I’ve realized more recently, I think I’d really enjoy being a voice actor! Doing funny voices and also using my natural voice to make money sounds pretty fun.

(I am not, however, quitting my day job anytime soon or ever).

All of this is to say, I went and bought a good starter microphone and pop filter, built a blanket fort with my fiancée, and recorded a few voices. Then I dusted off Audacity to filter out how freaking loud my house can be when you plug in a decent microphone.

And so far? The results have turned out… well, okay, but definitely better than I thought they would!

Therefore, I’m happy and excited to announce that I’ll also be using this site as a way to host and advertise my upcoming demo reel! And maybe start getting some clients as well. I’ve already recorded my well-honed Dr. Evil and Gollum impressions, and I’ve also recorded a couple of my original characters as well.

Will anything come of this? I have no idea, but I can’t wait to try some more. If nothing else, it’s fun building a blanket fort in my living room.

Will I keep writing? You bet your sweet bippy, because that’s my primary creative outlet. Will I put all my eggs in one basket, though? Nah. Will I also be counting my chickens before they hatch? Also, nah, but I don’t have chickens - literally or figuratively - to count yet anyhow.

But soon! Figurative chickens only. Not literal ones.

Get it?
